VETERINARIANS THAT WORK WITH PRIMATES

If you are researching the availability of qualified veterinarians in your area, you will quickly discover how difficult and frustrating it can be. Vets that work with non human primates are becoming increasingly difficult to find for several reasons. First and foremost, I believe, is the fact that they are not a common companion animal and therefore sustaining a practice that has the necessary equipment and support staff  at the ready is simply not cost effective. In recent years, operating a veterinary clinic has become extremely costly for reasons like risk/liability insurance, increased equipment and operating costs, and staffing. I spoke frankly with my vet and also found out that even vets with "exotic" rotation in their education rarely, if ever, see a primate unless they specifically seek it out. Some vets have wild animal rotations but even then, it may include big cats, condors, and giraffes but not primates. Even with primate training, experience is limited to laboratory or zoo environments that have little resemblance to their specific needs and behavior in a home setting. For this reason you can not assume that a vet that readily treats  "exotics" will be willing or qualified to see your primate. Always call in advance and have a vet at the ready before obtaining your primate infant. Also, be aware that a although a vet may be highly qualified to treat your primate's physical needs he or she may not have the necessary "hands-on" background  experience to help you with clear advice on behavior and discipline. This is where a circle of support from other monkey owners and knowledgeable breeders will be invaluable. Ask your vet if they know of other primate owners that you can talk with, or email me here a Monkeykisses and I'll try to set you up with experienced caretakers to help you if I can. I am fortunate to know many monkey moms that willingly give of their time and years of experience to help new owners face the many challenges that come up as their companion matures.

Below is a list of vets who are well qualified to care for your primate.
This list changes all the time; vets retire and new practices open, and  keeping it current to the day would be a full-time undertaking.
If none are listed near you, please don't hesitate to contact me. I will be happy to help you locate a vet...I'm bound to know someone who knows someone who can help you. I've also found that vets that don't treat primates are often kind enough to pass along the name of a one who does, if you just ask.
